Very soon most of you will be delivering performance reviews. If you’re good at it, you’ll concentrate on WHAT your team members achieved, HOW they got it done, and WHY it matters. But have you thought about the WHO? Who do you need them to be, i.e., what role do you need this team member to fulfill at this point in time? Who do they want to be? Are they creating the reputation they need to sustain and grow their career? As you prepare to give feedback and set goals for the future, remember to engage your team member in a discussion of WHO.
