When I wrote my book Managing the Moment in 2013, “virtual” interaction meant mostly conference calls and, occasionally, video meetings beamed from one conference room to another.
Now, especially with the pandemic, we all have much more experience with platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams and WebEx. Some folks do an excellent job communicating virtually. Others…not so much!
My next big adventure is to write a second edition to my book to cover the do’s and don’ts of virtual presence and communication, and I’d love to hear your ideas, observations and stories!
What have you noticed people doing well?
Have you seen excellent examples of lighting or background? What were they?
Have you noticed someone do a great job of looking at the camera when appropriate?
How about people’s voices? What have you heard that really stood out and captured your attention?
Likewise, what have been the big distractors during virtual meetings?
Monotone voice?
Lack of facial expression when speaking or just listening?
Slumped posture?
Poor camera angle or dim lighting?
Run-on speech?
Filler?
Other?
